Trial Interventions
In the 1980s, prevalence rates for autism were estimated at 1 in 1000 children. In 2010, the Centers for Disease Control announced that one in 110 children is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. With the rise in prevalence has come a rise in the number of new treatments. However, there is not enough research into the effectiveness of these treatments and even less research about which treatments work best for which kids. Yet schools are federally mandated to use "evidence-based" treatments and insurance companies often won't pay for treatments without scientific evidence of benefit.
CAR is dedicated both to testing existing treatments and developing new ones that may help individuals living with autism. By studying not only whether a treatment works, but for whom it works and under what circumstances, we hope to minimize the time families spend searching for the elusive program that will help.
