Dr. Maxell is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Center for Autism Research (CAR). Her main area of research focuses on translational biomarkers for autism spectrum disorders (ASD). She is very interested in integrating behavior and electrophysiology (ERP/EEG/MEG) to determine additional diagnostic criteria for ASD. She is also interested in the neurochemistry of ASD. Specifically increased excitation (mediated by glutamate) and/or reduced inhibition (through impaired GABA neurotransmission) are proposed to result in a hyperexcitable state and may be associated with the sensory abnormalities seen in ASD. Her research at CAR focuses on the relationship between states of arousal and ASD.
